Las Vegas Nurse Jobs Affected by Hospital Operating Losses

Although the local and national healthcare industry has continued to thrive, the millions of dollars lost by local hospitals could adversely affect Las Vegas nurse jobs

and other health-related professions.

The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services

recently reported that hospitals in the Las Vegas area saw operating losses of $133.1 million during 2009, which is almost twice as much as the operating losses experienced the previous year.

University Medical Center of Southern Nevada

accounted for much of the decline, with the hospital reporting an operating loss of $92.2 million. Of the 12 other hospitals in the area, eight lost money during 2009, while only three were able to improve their bottom lines.

Houston Medical Jobs, Education Jobs See Biggest Yearly Increase

As employment jumped over the month, Houston medical jobs

and education jobs added the most workers over the year.

Although the December 2009 unemployment rate for the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area has not yet been released, the rate throughout Texas

as a whole was 8.3 percent that month, lower than the national unemployment rate of 10 percent. Houston had an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent during November.

The area had a total non-farm employment of 2,535,600 workers during December, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics

. This is up from 2,532,900 workers during November, but a 3.5 percent decrease from December 2008.

Portland OR Jobs Created by Adidas Amidst Layoffs

After a round of layoffs, one popular sportswear company plans to create more Portland OR jobs

Earlier this month, Adidas America Inc.

laid off a small number of employees as part of a restructuring effort in the United States. The company did not release the exact number of workers who were let go, but said it would release further details at a later date, according to an article by Portland Business Journal .

That same restructuring plan, however, will ultimately result in the addition of 60 jobs at the company’s Portland

headquarters. Adidas, which is the North American subsidiary of the German sportswear and apparel company Adidas AG, currently employs 800 workers at its headquarters.

Houston Government Jobs Saved by Other Efforts to Close Budget Gap

Several other efforts to close a large budget gap could help save Houston government jobs

City officials have announced that they will consider relying on employee attrition, efficiency gains from technology and money from a reserve fund to make up for about $7.5 million missing from Houston’s budget this fiscal year.

“I think we’re on the front end of recovery as opposed to the middle or the end,” Controller Ronald C. Green

told Bloomberg . “If the trends continue in the direction that they’re going, we will be in a little more of a dire situation.”

Nashville Jobless Get Unemployment Upgrade

Those without Nashville jobs

will soon get some better help when it comes to receiving unemployment.

The U.S. Department of Labor

recently announced that the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development will receive $6,892,526 for technology upgrades to the system that processes benefits for unemployed workers . Of the $164.5 million total awarded to 49 states by the DOL, Tennessee received the fourth-highest amount.

“The unprecedented demand for unemployment insurance benefits has made it clear there are opportunities to improve our systems,” Labor Commissioner James Neeley said. “For the last year we’ve utilized a number of short-term solutions to handle the workload. This grant will allow us to develop long-term infrastructure improvements for benefits processing and payment.”
