Denver Jobs Lost

Although Colorado saw its unemployment rate decline last month, many Denver jobs (Click here) and jobs throughout the state were still lost.

During August, Colorado’s unemployment rate decreased from 7.8 percent to 7.3 percent, which is lower than the national unemployment rate of 9.7 percent. The state had a total non-farm employment of 2,247,700 workers during August, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,253,000 workers during July and a 4.7 percent decrease from last year.

The unemployment rate for the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield area has not yet been released, but the area did continue to lose jobs last month. The Denver area had a total non-farm employment of 1,206,800 workers during August, down from 1,208,900 workers during July and a 4.6 percent decrease from last year.

On a month-to-month basis, the financial activities industry added 200 jobs and the government industry added 1400 jobs.

Only two industries managed to add jobs when compared to last year. The education and health services industry employed 136,300 workers during August, down from 136,500 workers during July, but a 1.9 percent increase from last year. The government industry employed 170,800 workers during August, up from 169,400 workers during July and a .2 percent increase from last year.

The mining, logging and construction industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. That industry employed 80,000 workers during August, down from 80,400 workers during July and a 15.6 percent decrease from last year.

Other industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in jobs include:

  • manufacturing by 7.2 percent
  • trade, transportation and utilities by 6.2 percent
  • information by 6.4 percent
  • financial activities by 3.8 percent
  • professional and business services by 5.7 percent
  • leisure and hospitality by 3.4 percent
  • other services by 4.1 percent
