Three New Spots to Create Las Vegas Jobs

Three new hotels and casinos are expected to create numerous jobs in Las Vegas

.

While the Las Vegas job

market has been tough for workers, job cuts at many casinos and other businesses have become a benefit to companies trying to staff new hotels and casinos slated to open later this year. The three main hotels and casinos include Aliante Station , Eastside Cannery and Encore, a Wynn Resorts Ltd. property expected to open in December.

The three facilities together are expected to create 7,700 jobs and contribute to a projected 7.5 percent increase in leisure and hospitality employment by the end of 2009. According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics

, Nevada had a total non-farm employment of 1,281,800 in July 2008, a decrease of .6 percent from last year.

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal

, when Station Casinos began accepting applications for Red Rock Resort in November 2005, the unemployment rate in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, was at 3.7 percent with a labor force of 875,000 people. The county’s unemployment rate this June came in at 6.5 percent with 64,600 unemployed workers and a labor force of 996,000 people.

As of June, job cuts in area hotels and casinos have decreased employment in the gaming industry by 3 percent since last year. However, this is making it easier for the new facilities to find applicants.

Wynn Resorts Ltd. received 20,000 applications in the first three days to fill spots at its $2.2 billion Encore facility. The company expects to receive at least 65,000 applications by the time Encore opens in December. Aliante Station, a $675 million facility slated to open in November, began accepting applications in July to fill 1,200 positions. Cannery Casino Resorts, a $250 million facility, has received 20,000 applications for its 1,200 available jobs.

It is expected half of the jobs at Eastside Cannery will be transfer workers and former Nevada Palace workers, and transfer workers will fill about 400 spots at Aliante Station.

Growth in the gaming industry is expected to continue through 2010 as the M Resort, a $1 billion facility slated to create 2,000 jobs and open next spring will begin taking applications in September. The Fontainebleau, a $2.9 billion facility scheduled to create 6,000 jobs and open in late 2009 will begin taking applications early next year. Also, Boyd Gaming Corp.

plans on hiring 10,000 workers for its Echelon facility, valued at $4.8 billion, while MGM Mirage will begin accepting applications early next year to fill 12,000 spots at its City Center facility.
