Lennox Hearth Products, a California-based company, recently announced its plan to move its headquarters and research and development operations to Nashville. The transition will bring about 60 employees to the city.

Lennox manufactures and markets factory-built fireplaces, stoves and other hearth products for new homes and remodeling projects. The company also plans to consolidate its customer and technical service departments in Union City, Tenn.

According to an article by the Nashville Business Journal, the company is relocating in order to reduce costs by positioning product development closer to its manufacturing operations. The phased consolidation process is expected to be complete by Q1 2010.

“Given the challenges presented by the economic downturn, especially in the residential new construction segment of our business, we have taken this action to ensure the long-term health of our business and our ability to keep our customers competitive,” Wendy Howells, vice president and general manager at Lennox, said in the article.

“Our top priority during the transition is to minimize any disruption to our customer, and to assist our impacted employees in making the transition to either our Nashville or Union City locations or to other future opportunities,” she added.

Local and state officials are optimistic about the company’s relocation. Matt Kisber, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development, said the state is “gratified when companies create research-oriented headquarters positions in our state.”

“Lennox Hearth Products is already a solid source of manufacturing jobs in Tennessee, and we are very pleased to support the relocation of their headquarters to our state,” he said in the article. “We appreciate Lennox Hearth’s investment and look forward to the continued growth of both their business and our relationship.”
