The report examined 43 markets that are considered important to retail vitality and ranked those based on vacancy, absorption, construction, and rental rate trends. It also took into account such data as unemployment, housing, and income growth.
The top 10 retail markets include:
- Washington, D.C.
- San Francisco
- New York City
- San Diego
- San Jose/South Bay
Although the report did not name Denverretail expansion plans
Part of the reason for the mediocre retail climate in Denver could be that the local economy is still trying to recover from the economic recession. Although the economy looks better than it did this time last year, jobs are still being lost on a monthly basis and unemployment continues to climb.
During January, the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield area’s unemployment rate increased to 9.9 percent after remaining at 8.7 percent for two months in a row, which was well above the national average at the time of 9 percent.
